Life’s little luxuries

You know those little, seemingly meaningless, items that add sparkle to a day? Something that may not cost a lot, but somehow makes the humdrum of day to day life more bearable?

For me, I’m realizing that my “little luxuries” are pretty consistent from season to season, but the aesthetic of the item may change.

A lot of my favorites came as recommendations online that I tried and loved, and while I realize what one person considers soothing or uplifting, may do the total opposite for others, I thought I’d share my list of life’s little luxuries below, in case something here resonates with you.

I absolutely love the scent and feel of this Orange Blossom Honey hand soap. I’ve never been to France, but every time I wash my hands with this, I’m pretty sure I’ve been there in a past life. I can literally see myself exploring the streets of Marseille wearing a flowy white linen dress that daintily ties at the shoulders. Is that too much? Because that is a truthful depiction of what I see when I use this soap. I’m transported to France.  Try some. I’m dying to know what vision you see when you use it, haha.

Alright, now that I’ve taken you to Marseille, it’s time to let you in on another random life luxury: decorative paper napkins.

Boring, you think?

Nope. Here’s why: There’s nothing that brings about nostalgia for me like a pattern. To get a little more insight into nostalgia I did some research and came up with this explanation of why we seem to enjoy places, people, or things that bring about nostalgia for us. Most profound to me was this quote I found by Clay Routledge, a social psychologist at North Dakota State University: “We see nostalgia as a psychological resource that people can dip into to conjure up the evidence that they need to assure themselves that they’re valued.”

I must need this assure a lot, because I do find myself quite attached to things and places that bring about nostalgia.

Alright, back to the napkins.

I love to have several patterns to choose from stowed away in a drawer. Personally, I prefer the cocktail size that I can use in the morning to rest my coffee stirring spoon on or to place a cup or glass on to absorb condensation. They’re also great to pull out and place with a cheese board or hors d’oeuvres. Voila, instant charm.

Aren’t these pretty for spring or summer?

Or how ’bout these from Mackenzie-Childs?

Pro-tip: Dollar Tree has some of the cutest cocktail napkins in their party supplies aisle.

What are some things that add beauty to your everyday life? Please share them with me!

January 2019 Author Update

It’s been a loooong while since I’ve given an update on when my newest book, Leighton, will be published on Amazon. I am beyond happy to say that the book goes to the editor in the next couple of weeks!

It looks very much like I will be celebrating Release Day during the second week of February <3

A lot of work, sweat, tears, anxiety and stress goes into the writing of a book and I have put even more pressure on myself to make sure this latest is the best yet! Readers have been waiting a long time and they deserve to have this book be worthy of the wait.

Check back here in the next week for an excerpt from Leighton!

Under-eye Gel

This No More Baggage is by far my favorite find this week. I’m not sure if I just walk around in a perpetual state of exhaustion, or if puffy under-eyes come with age, but they are a daily thing for me.

I saw a bunch of people posting about this product recently when it went on mega sale, and then the reviews came, and they were raving.

So, I decided to try it when it went on sale for 50% off. And now I’m raving.

You dab it under your eyes, and seconds later, you can literally feel the area tightening up. And, if you watch really closely, you can see the puffiness under your eyes shrink. I’m SOLD. Try it, you will be too.

Also, after using the No More Baggage, I’m dying to try this 3D filler mask.

A Simplified Life: Tactical Tools for Intentional Living

By Emily Ley

I love this girl. If you don’t already follow her on Instagram, go do that now. You won’t regret it. Her posts are filled with life and organizational tips, product recommendations, and adorable (yet real life) pics of her kids. It’s an overall aesthetically pleasing feed that’ll brighten and enlighten your day.

Then, get this book.

There are so many great ideas to make your life more simplified and less hectic. My favorite, and one I’ve recently put into action, is to donate your current towels (all those mis-matched, stained up ones) and order inexpensive all-white towel sets from Walmart or Target. I ordered these when they were on sale, and got two sets for $25 including shipping. I wash them twice a week and add either bleach or oxyclean to the load to keep them fresh and clean. The best part: I never have a 4-foot high mound of stinky towels to wash. Plus, my linen closet looks so much neater and more organized now.

My other favorite tip from the book: wash a small load of clothes daily, no matter what the colors. She recommends adding a ColorCatcher sheet to the load to prevent color bleeding. I have to admit, I was leery of this, but I gave it a try (even including reds in the loads) and I’ve had no problems. This is now part of my daily routine and has really made laundry a little less overwhelming for me.

Target 4.39

Trust me. You need this book in your life.

Not a big reader? Order the audible version. I listened to this book while cooking and cleaning and really enjoyed it. The narration is good and it allows you to accomplish other things at the same time. Win-win.

Eyeliner

I don’t always use eyeliner, but when I do, I have two kinds I alternate between depending on the look I want. For winged liner, I’ve settled on this affordable option in jet black. I’ve tried multiple brands at different cost points, but I always come back to this one. And, it’s $2. I love it.

If I just want to make my lash line pop, I use this no-tug waterproof gel liner in black. It’s long wearing, doesn’t smudge and makes my lashes appear thicker than they really are (because irl they are scanty).

Mascara

My lashes need all the boost they can get (but what girl doesn’t want that?). I’m kinda choosy when it comes to mascaras, but this one has had me hooked for the past 6 months. I apply two coats of Hello Lashes 5 in 1 mascara, and that’s plenty. I love that the wand keeps my lashes fanned out prettily, and doesn’t clump them into spikes.

If I really want to pile on the wow-factor, I’ll add one coat of this mascara on top of the two base coats of this. And wha-laa, no need for fake lashes. You’re welcome.

Erika

Face Cream

I wear the Miracle Worker moisturizer morning (under makeup) and night (before bed). It’s thick and creamy but absorbs into the skin like a dream. I’ve noticed my face is not only much smoother after two months of using, but my fine lines are a lot less noticeable. Plus, that glow! I’ve had three different people ask me what I’m using to keep my skin so smooth and glow-y.

The price of this is $60, which is pricey in my book, but well worth it (I mean, it’s your skin!) I’m going to share how I validate the expense:

Before, I was using a drugstore anti-aging cream by ROC. It was great, but not nearly as good as this one, and it was $25 a tube. One tube lasted me one, maybe one-and-a-half, months.

This cream lasts 3 months. Broken down, that’s $20 a month for a much more luxurious and effective skin care product. Give it a try, you won’t regret it. Promise.

XOXO,

Erika

BB Cream

This BB Cream is a literal lifesaver.

It smooths the complexion, adjusts to any skin tone, and adds just a hint of color. Mostly, I wear it under my foundation. But on days I don’t have the time and/or energy to apply a full face of makeup, I use my fingertips to quickly blend this into my skin, and wha-laa, I look like my skin is naturally pretty, haha. And, the price is a steal. You can pick it up at any drugstore, or get at Ulta and use one of their coupons to get it for even less.

XOXO,

Erika
